Oral History Project

The farm and house that my father was raised in belonged to my granddad and his family had been running the farm and making honey since the early 1900's, before they moved. Hawa Ismail Omar was his mother's name; she came from a family north of Adi Keyih and had two brothers and five sisters, all other than her. My grand mum's father was also a farmer and he had a good reputation because he would tell folktales and Eritrea's history.
Today my father has only four of his siblings who are alive. He had three brothers, Idress, Omar and Salah and five sisiters who were Kadija, Maymuna, Fatima, Jumah and Saieda. He was the second oldest and the oldest boy in the family. In the farm my family mainly produced honey and they sometimes sold cattle and sheep. My father always said to me that the honey which they produced was the best honey around and his father and he would usually go monthly to sell the honey and some of the livestock in a market to generate some income for the whole family to live on. The village that my father grew up in was a small one and everyone knew each other. He would always indicate to me the closeness of the people and unlike Western countries, back in Eritrea there's always an enjoyable atmosphere when people gather around and his fondest memories are often when the family sat together.
Throughout his childhood Mr Mohamed Ali had friends and cousins to communicate with. The only way that my father and his friends could have fun was to go to the small stream in the village. The stream was about an hours walk away from the village, but because all the kids knew how to take care of themselves they only went to enjoy it and to play or swim around. His closest friends were his cousins and he remembers a boy called Ahmed who was so tall and everyone wished that they could be like his.
At the age of twenty my father moved to Cairo, Egypt to get a better education. He attended a school which was also a college in the Cairo called Alzahar and studied there for about four years before he went to university in1961.
