The crucible

"Nice guys finish last" is a popular quote in society. Is there truth in this statement? Or is it just a catchy phrase? It depends on the situation. In the game of life there are winners and losers. There is no in between, it is either won or lost. In "The Crucible", there are some obvious winners and losers. Most people in Salem were good Christians, however it seemed that evil prevailed over good. .
A winner is someone who comes out on top of a situation. Three people that come to mind from the play are Abigail, Mary Warren, and Tituba. These three women have fo0ught and lied there way to the winner's circle. Abigail, in my mind, is the most corrupt of anyone in the play. She has helped commit adultery, tried dig Elizabeth Procter an early grave, and committed purgery. "Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnams dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will com to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you. And you know I can do it; ." She put the fear of death in everyone who was in the woods that night, and made herself unlikely to be caught. With all these crimes evident, she still remains innocent, that is why she is a winner. Mary Warren is not as corrupt as Abigail, but she has still gotten away with her life. Mary made a poppet and Hale found it, with the discovery of the poppet she is thought to be a witch. They take her into court and the blame somehow gets shifted onto John Procter. Directly after Abigail "saw" an evil bird that was Mary Warren, Mary makes up a story of her own "He come at me by night and every day to sign it My name, he wants my name. "I"ll murder you," he says, "if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court", he says!". Mary is a winner because she escapes with her life.
