"Stop Running! Don't splash other people! Stop running! Don't swim under the diving board! STOP RUNNING!" In order to be a lifeguard at the Virden Municipal Pools those are, pretty much, the only phrases you have to say all day long. Every summer, from May 31st until August 10th, the Virden Pool opens its gates to all avid swimmers from near and far. Being employed at the pool, one would notice that there is a wide array of patrons who take part in the summer fun in Virden's "Public Pisser", as some may call it. Employees encounter clean and cute swimmers, I'm-a-pervert-swimmer and, how could anyone forget, the ever so dreaded pool rats.
             Clean and Cute Swimmers.
Clean and cute swimmers are the type of kids who you want to come to the pool everyday to entertain you. These are the normal, well behaved and practice good hygiene swimmers. These kids are few and far between. Usually clean and cute swimmers have their own pool or have a friend who has one, so they only come around when they are totally desperate to take a dip. When these kids finally attend it's like heaven for a lifeguard. They obey the rules, you only have to tell them something once, and they love to buy the lifeguards snacks from the vending machines! One day Miranda was sitting up in her lifeguard stand and this little boy with bleach blonde hair and dark, tanned skin came up to her and started asking all kinds of questions: "What's your name? How old are you? What's this for? What's that for?" So after twenty minutes of being bombarded with every question possible the little tike finally just sat there in silence. Mirarnda leaned over and said, "Hey! You wanna help me lifeguard?" His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree and excitedly shook his head yes. So for the next hour Miranda had a little helper by her side the whole entire time. Eventually he got hungry and went to get a snack, when he came back he had one for Miranda too.
