Walt Whitman Leaves of Grass

In Walt Whitman's collection of poems entitled "Leaves of Grass" we are able to see how Whitman is a realist. When compared to previous works we have studied, he has a more modern personality and portrays the world we really live in.
The speaker of the poem has an interesting relationship with his parents. He sees flaws in his father and it seems to the reader that they are not as close as to the speaker's mother. The mother is a quiet woman and keeps to herself so it is hard to tell how close they really are. I find these qualities to be tied with Whitman's inability to get close to people. "To touch my person to some one else's is about as much as I can stand." (Song Of Myself).
Whitman is a poet for the people, and likes to portray the average laborer in his poems. Ironically he is considered one of the most influential poets in America's history. Not only did he write relatively modern poetry, but also his poems portrayed the average American in order for it to be widely sympathized with. .
For our final paper I have been looking at the effect of the Civil War played in Whitman's poetry. He was a volunteer nurse right here in Washington D.C. and was able to witness first hand the sadness and horror of war. Thus going above and beyond the term "patriotic poet.".
For such a well-known poet there are still many mysteries behind his pen. However, Whitman's poetry is a wonderful voice for the different ideas and opinions of America during the mid to late 1800s. .
