The Slow Film

This film could have been an autobiography because 8 ½ is about a director, which he is, and there were a lot of flashbacks to the director's childhood. This film gave a lot of insight into a director's world, which I am sure Fellini had experienced. All actors wanted to constantly know what their part was. Others were also looking at him for answers such as his producers, his wife, and his mistresses. He had a lot of pressure put on him and he portrayed it with a comical flare as he showed his producer sinking a large amount of money into a set consisting of a spaceship when he did not even know what he was going to write about yet. His producer kept building the set bigger and bigger into the sky. I think that is why this movie was so confusing because he had to constantly go down different avenues to try to get inspiration and the littlest things would send him off into a flashback of his childhood or a fantasy. You never really knew where he was headed, even after the scene had been playing for awhile.
Music was not a major element in this film. It was constantly in the background and when it had scenes of the director as a boy then you would hear a woman singing with a single guitar playing in the background but on the whole music was just for background filler. At times it was not playing at all and maybe he used it for dramatic effect to make the moment silent and create a point. .
