Analysis of poems by Wallace Stevens and T.
The first poem I read by Wallace Stevens, "Sunday Morning", presented him as an environmentalist because he is talking about the weather of that Sunday morning and what kind of a mood it carried. The poem is a little bit lengthy so I decided to divide my analysis into the different stanzas. The first stanza brings out a sad outlook. The morning is unpleasant, "the pungent oranges and bright, green wings seem things in some procession of the dead" and it is also calm and boring "the day is like wide water, without sound, stilled for the passing of her dreaming feet". The second stanza continues to describe the ugliness of the day. The third stanza somewhat explains the reason why the day is unpleasant. It talks about a god, Jove, who does not seem to be of any good. It seems like she was an evil god because her desire was the people's blood which is a sign of death. The fact there is the mention of a god brings out the idea that the people worshiped idols. The fourth and fifth stanzas go on to show how evil and inhuman Jove is. Stanza six brings out a sense of reasoning. The people seem to be fed up of the unbearable conditions and are starting to wonder whether things will ever change. The seventh stanza brings out a sense of rebellion, it presents the people as tired of the suffering and now fighting back but in the eighth stanza we are kind of taken back to the beginning because it seems like the people are doomed. They have no way of escaping their way of life. I think the main themes of this poem are suffering and death. I was unable to derive the meaning behind it but I think the religious status during the period that the poem written was of great influence. Wallace used various stylistic devices to emphasize his points. He for example used similes e.g. in stanza one he says "the day is like wide water-. There is also an extensive use of rhetoric questions and personification through out the poem.
