And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie is a murder mystery in which none of the victims are innocent and all the characters have strong feelings of guilt about themselves. The entire novel revolves around the administration of justice. The "Ten Little Indians" rhyme tells of a series of inevitable deaths and the novel acts out this rhyme.
I believe that Agatha Christie tried to show two main ideas in this novel: how our conscience affects all of us and that justice will always be served in the end. All the characters (invited guests) on Indian Island were guilty of murdering someone but were never found guilty by a court of law. The quote "There was a silence - a comfortable replete silence. Into that silence came The Voice. Without warning, inhuman, penetrating. "Ladies and gentlemen. Silence please You are charged with the following indictments."" (Pg. 42) This shows that the people have been brought to Indian Island for some sinister purpose having to do with their past crimes. The guests are charged with their past murders and all the guests are murdered on Indian Island. Christie shows that the guilty receive what they deserve and that no one gets away with murder.
"Oh, don't you understand? Haven't you read that idiotic rhyme?. Seven little Indian boys chopping up sticks." (Pg. 169). The poem "Ten Little Indians" hangs in each of the guests rooms. All the guests die one by one as the ten little Indians die in the poem.
"Mr. Owen could only come to the island in one way. It is perfectly clear. Mr. Owen is one of us." (Pg. 135) Mr. Owen was the host of the party. The guests thought he was killing everyone but they were all wrong. Eventually everyone starts to suspect everyone else and paranoia sets in.
"I have wanted to commit a murder myself." (Pg.263) This quote appears in the epilogue. A fisherman finds a manuscript in a bottle written by the character Judge Wargrave.
