Contrast of Jung and Freud

            Being the most influential men in psychology, Freud and Jung had both similarities and differences in their theories and insights. Through the years, Freud and Jung developed a close friendship with over 350 letters they've written to each other. However, their paths divided because of their different interpretations of the human-mind. .
             Freud believed in sex urges shaping the mind of people and therefore affecting their behaviors, whereas Jung didn't emphasize sex urges in his theories. He said "As for Freud's therapy, it is at best but one of several possible methods, and perhaps does not always offer in practice what one expects from it in theory." Jung didn't understand why sexual desires coming from childhood could have effect on our daily lives. .
             Freud divided personality into three systems: id, ego and superego. Id is the daily needs of people such as sleeping, eating etc. and it is based on pleasure of people. Ego system takes reality into consideration and controls life according to that. It basically follows reality principle. Superego takes the moral side of an individual into account and affects behaviors according to moral principles. Opposing to this theory of systems, Jung defined a different theory. He divided personality into personal and collective conscious and believed that every person had a common pool of memories. Unlike Freud, he believed in the archetypes" (emotionally charged images and thought forms that have universal meaning) conflict in defining human characteristic rather than sex urges" and id-ego-superego's conflicts. Basically, Jung's theory lacks the concepts of sexual urges and superego of Freud's theory. .
             Jung also didn't believe in Freud's Oedipus theory. Oedipus theory was based on a mythological story and it was about boys developing an emotional attachment to their mothers, resulting in hatred and jealousy of their fathers. Jung totally disagreed with this story and believed that all of this was part of the collective consciousness which is found in all humans.
