Priscilla Merriman Evans was born on May 4, 1835. Their family lived in Pernbrokeshire, Wales and four years later after Priscilla was born her father moved them ten miles away from that town. She had one sister who was two years older named Sarah. At the age of eleven Priscilla was taken out of school to learn the household chores. Their mother getting sick and someone had to learn how to take care of the family. Her mother died on November 8, 1851 and the ability to take care of a family fell upon her shoulders. Priscilla went to a morman meeting with her father and she started to change religions. Her father was highly against her joining the church but she joined it anyway. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints baptized her on February 26, 1852. On Sunday's Priscilla would walk seven miles to Stepaside to go to the meetings. Around this time a missionary named Thomas Evans was sent up to the town she lives in. Priscilla was soon engaged to him. She was married on April 3, 1856 in Pernbroke, which was ten miles away from Tenby. They set sail on April 17, 1856 on the vessel S.S. Curling to go to Boston. On May 23, 1856 they landed in Boston and used cattle cars to go to Iowa City. They had to have cars made so they had to stay in Iowa City for three weeks before they could go to their Zion. They walked three-hundred-miles to their winter quarters on the Missouri River. They started their one-thousand-mile journey and while on that journey they almost ran out of food. They had two blind men, a man with only one arm, and a widow with five children traveling with them. Their leader on their journey was a man named Edward Bunker. Many sons, daughters, mothers, and fathers died along this journey because of being worn out or lack of food. Buffalo would sometimes stop in front of the wagons but the travelers did not pack a gun and could not shoot any. Her husband jokingly told an Indian that he could have Pricilla for a pony.
