His mother was domineering, yet hopeful for her son to live a comfortable life. Almost as if she wanted to live the life she did not have the means to accomplish, through her son. Charles Bovary was portrayed as a dull and boring individual. He was put through medical school to become a doctor. Charles next step was marriage to Madame Dubac, who was supposedly in the bourgeoisie class. Madame Dubac professed to have money and an elevated position in society. These claims were untruthful; she lied about her economic arrangement. However, Charles was not affected by the news because of his laidback character. Given this situation, Flaubert shows Charles lack of concern in terms of his social status for the first time. Sooner or later, the marriage came to an end when Dubac passed away.
After some time Charles is introduced to Emma, after healing her father's leg. He found himself visiting the house more and more often. He realizes his love for Emma and asked for her hand in marriage. The date is set, and the young couple is then married. Emma is also a Middle-Class woman, although, she was very different from her husband. Her ultimate dream is to become part of the bourgeoisie class. The passionate young beauty becomes conscious of her husbands unenthusiastic nature soon enough. Despite his prospective ability to achieve Emma's dreams, Charles lacked the desire to fulfill his wife's ideas. Emma's life had many losses, and it seemed all due to her extreme infactuation with the bourgeoisie class. She attempted her exploration for contentment by borrowing money to buy the most modern fashions. Following this effort, which did not please her longing, she embarked on having love affairs. Her first was with Rodolphe who was placed in the higher class. Emma's second affair was with Leon who had aspirations to be a success. Regrettably, after the affairs came to a bitter end, Emma was still left without her vital need of happiness.
