Rhetorical Appeal Analysis of Confederate Flag Articles

In the third paragraph, ethos is a more frequently used appeal. The opening sentence is also a fair-minded concession establishing intrinsic ethos. The argument continues with a statement of how people of racial and religious minorities are offended by the flag for many reasons. This supporting statement is an example of intrinsic ethos as well since it uses oppressed groups views rather than his own to support his argument. The statement makes his argument more reasonable by not incorporating his own opinion into it. Extrinsic ethos is introduced through the supporting statement of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) by establishing credibility through use of an institution. This also applies to the views of the National Conference for Community and Justice (NJJC) which are revealed in the fourth paragraph. The fourth paragraph is filled with intrinsic and extrinsic ethos. Extrinsic ethos is once again used by the statement from the President of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The statement being made by someone with an important position relating to the topic makes the argument more credible. Intrinsic ethos is very evident through the concession that the Confederate flag should be used for historical and educational purposes only. This is a strong ethical appeal as it supports the argument that the Confederate flag is a racist symbol; it also recognizes the opposing argument and makes a fair concession that builds up the character of Cloud and the NAACP. Cloud makes a compromise with the opposing side which makes him seem more fair-minded and intelligent. His character becomes more credible to both sides of the Confederate Flag controversy. Ethos in the overall argument is the strongest and most effective rhetorical appeal. Cloud supports his argument with extrinsic ethos by using institutions and authoritative roles that deal directly with the belief that the flag is a racial symbol.
