How does Tennesse Williams use music etc to create drama?

Music is the main tool used in A Streetcar Named Desire to create a dramatic atmosphere. There is a wide range of music used in different events and to portray different emotions.
The music of the "blue piano" is used whenever an important event is about to take place or an important speech is about to be made, this technique is applied to draw in the audiences attention and make them realise that what they are about to witness is a vital part of the play.
Often the music in the play that is heard by the audience is not heard by many of the characters as it is from within Blanche's mind. This is seen during Blanche's confession of her past to Mitch in which the Polka is heard by Blanche and the audience but not by Mitch. This draws the audience into Blanche's nightmare and also works to create sympathy for the character. Blanche's inner life is contemplated by Williams's use of music that creates a dreamlike feeling. .
Another way in which Williams creates dramatically appropriate moods is to use lighting to focus the audiences attention. .
A bright light is shone onto the stage whenever Blanche admits something about her past that is true. This light is made legitimate by having a locomotive pass by and shine light into the room. The light makes the audience aware that this version of Blanche's past is the true one.
Noise is a central tool in creating atmospheres in the play. Whenever the noise of a train is heard going past it signals that an important moment or speech is about to take place. .
Noise also is used to represent Blanche's nervousness. Several times in the play a cat is heard screeching and this creates an uneasy atmosphere on stage as Blanche is clearly shaken by this intrusive sound.
The staging of the play is subtly used to create different moods and atmospheres. Often how the rooms are split on stage represent the spilt between the characters, especially Stanley and Blanche, which adds to the drama of the scene.
