I agree with chief Black Hawk's point of view towards the white men as shown in his "For more than a hundred winters our nation was a powerful, happy, and united people" speech. Life is the most precious thing that one can lose, and I believe that once the Sauk people nourished, and helped the white men to survive, they should have dropped all prior duties and intentions, and showed praise towards Chief Black Hawk and the Sauk people. Being devoted to one's job is one thing, but being thankful for the gift of life is definitely something worth expressing. In agreeing with Chief Black Hawk, I believe that the white men were not only immoral, but rather cold-hearted. IT is not as if the whites came in and mass murdered the whole Native American race, but I belief that it was a horrible, deceitful form of giving thanks This setting would have been different, however, if the Sauk Native American tribe would have done something to provoke the whites, but I do not believe that they would have done so considering that the take over was probably completely unexpected. Black Hawk never must have thought that a group of people whom he has just met, provided food for, and shared shelter would even consider following through with their job.
An example of this dilemma could be related back to the days of African American slavery. Is it RIGHT to go ahead and whoop, slap, and yell profanities at a person that works hard, and many-a-times providing for the owner and his family? Is it RIGHT to acknowledge that a slave is essential to one's life, but treating the slave like an animal simply from the title of "slave master" and the "duties" that come along with it.
