             Over half of the population under the age of 60 years had experience with back pain, with half of those having lost time of work.(6).
             Prevention can be an important tool in decreasing the occurrence of low back pain. It requires knowledge of factors associated with and influencing the occurrence and natural course of low back pain. Improved knowledge about these factors would allow interventions at the work place.(7).
             In the Tanta Spinning and Weaving Company (Gharbia Governorate), workers carry out most of the industrial processes by their physical effort causing a great burden upon their vertebrae. This manual work predisposes to low back pain complaint among those workers. A previous study in this company revealed a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disabilities among its workers.(8).
             So, this study was conducted to highlight the prevalence, risk factors and causes of low back pain among textile workers in Tanta Spinning and Weaving Company.
             SUBJECTS AND METHODS.
             This cross sectional study was carried out in the Tanta Spinning and Weaving Company through the period from January to June 2003.
             The company included 3 departments: spinning and weaving production (employing 2000 workers), production services (employing 1127); and administration (employing 657 employees).
             The first two departments were considered manual while the third one was considered intellectual work.
             The present study included 10% (378 workers) of the total number of workers (3784) in the company taken by systematic random sampling using staff registers, where every tenth employee was chosen.
             Each chosen person was subjected to:.
             a) Questionnaire including: personal data as age, duration of employment, smoking habits; present history of back pain; past history of back pain and other chronic diseases; and family history of back pain.
             b) Medical examination: general including weight and height and local examination for back and lower limbs.
