Is downloading music a crime?

I believe the recording companies are targeting the wrong people. People who are simply downloading music shouldn't be prosecuted; it's those who upload music onto the internet who should be charged. For someone to buy an album and then upload it on the internet, for thousands to get their hands on, should be the crime; not downloading the music. When I download music, I do feel somewhat guilty, but I mostly get music that I can't find at any music store. If I do end up coming across a certain artist's music, I'll buy it because I've already heard and liked the music. I prefer buying the artist's album simply because I not only contribute to their success, but I also get the real thing with pictures, biographies and lyrics. I"m a musician myself, and I've tried selling my music, and the thought of other people "sharing" my tunes on the internet was kind of nerve racking. It only takes one inconsiderate person to upload a disc on the net, and there goes any chances of success for that individual or band. Nobody will buy, they will simply download. But, record companies have already found ways to eliminate this problem by creating cd's that cannot be uploaded onto computers. The up and coming musicians wishing to sell their product will be safe due to these new "copy controlled" discs. But for the other musicians/bands on the net, well better luck next time.
