How Do Sutures Dissolve?

Did you know that a catgut suture has been around since 150 A. But what so modern doctors use for sutures with the right compatibility, strength, and ability to dissolve using the right biochemistry materials. Doctors use a Synthetic Biodegradable polymer for all the compatibility reasons listed above. They are built in two different ways: 1) Hydrolysis, which dissolves with the reaction of water. 2)Enzymatically, which breaks down with the reaction of an enzyme in the body.
             The Chemical Specifics.
Reading this article I found out that doctors use two different types of sutures, one for internal and one for commercial. I am going to focus on the commercial sutures being as that is the type that most people will receive in the course of their lifetime. Commercial sutures are polymerized from a lactic acid to a poly(lactic acid) other wise called PLA. PLA is prepared by lactic acid ring opening (Fig 1 &2). When this happens it allows the body to break the suture down and excreted from the body as carbon dioxide.
             Everyday Life.
This is extremely interesting being as I have had stitches a multiple number of times. I have only had PLA sutures once though. I found that informational that the sutures just get released form our bodies as carbon dioxide and water. This makes sense because everyday we are in contact with both of those substances. This relates to everyday life also because everyday people all around the world are getting sutures for one reason or another. I know most people don't know what their sutures are made of so maybe it would be nice if they did know what was in their sutures and how their body breaks them down. This way people would be just a little smarter in the world of chemistry.
             Tying to Class Material.
This fits perfectly into Complete Oxidation of Organic Compounds. An organic compound is defined as a compound consisting of only non-metal atoms, with the majority of the atoms being C and H.
