He is attracted to her for all the wrong reasons. Joy has never put much trust into anything, let alone, anyone. Joy herself is a little surprised with this situation because she is describes as an unattractive woman with a fake leg. As they move on they become to get very serious. He asks her to prove how much she loves him. Her test is to take off her leg and show him where it joins on her body. When he has the leg in his possession he tells joy he isn't what he claims to be. He tells her about his recent "relationships" and how he likes to steal certain body parts from other women. When he is finished he runs off with the leg and leaves Joy lonely in the loft. Joy then realizes that he was never interested in her; al he wanted was her prosthetic leg. Mrs. Freeman witnesses the salesmen running off in the distance and learns that country people aren't as innocent as they appear. Unfortunately for Joy; she learned the hard way. The irony of the whole thing is that Joy finally opened up and trusted someone. Much to the dismay of Joy, it backfires on her as she was left alone in the loft. If she "d stuck to her beliefs she wouldn't have been in that situation. This trust issue is tested also in "Good Country People." In this story a family accidentally takes the wrong turn into a dirt road and crashes their vehicle. Stranded on this road they desperately seek help in a criminal ridden state. They do seek help from four gentlemen, but little did they know these were the four criminals on the run. Because they trusted these convicts it ultimately cost them their lives. In "Parker's Back" trust is also an issue. Parker finally believes he has done something right to please his wife, who supposedly is very religious. He puts the trust of Christ on his back to please her . In the end she is dumbfounded with the tattoo and is still unhappy. Although her didn't please her he feels he is a different man with Christ on his back.
