Gullivers Travels

He made his feelings very obvious as he said, " [t]he captain had often entreated me to strip myself of my savage dress, and offered to lend me the best suit of clothes he had. This I would not be prevailed on to accept, abhorring to cover myself with anything that had been on the back of a yahoo " (274). Gulliver's actions further segregate him from humanity while his inability to recognize that he is not a Houyhnhnm creates only hatred towards his fellow man simply because they are not considered to be perfect. The Yahoos or humans are the painful images of what man would become without the capabilities of logic and reason. The Yahoos bear a strong resemblance to human beings both physically and morally. They are considered animals without having a viable civilization based on honesty, purity, or reverence. In realizing this, Gulliver starts believing that his own kind are worse than the lowly Yahoos because humans waste their reason and use it for destructive purposes and evil tendencies. What Gulliver doesn't understand is that the two races are both the extremes and diverse opposites of one another. Man is neither Yahoo nor Houyhnhnm because he is an imperfect creature that has the power to live a decent life if only he will recognize and learn from his limitations and experiences.
As the voyage continued, Captain Mendez continued to treat Gulliver as an honored guest giving him the best of his provisions and services. As they arrived in Lisbon, the Captain further showed his kindness and generosity by taking Gulliver to his own home and having special clothes made for him. During this time, Gulliver simply tolerated the company of the Captain. The feelings of loathing and revulsion that had consumed him for so long were still very present and had begun to increase while being surrounded by so many humans or Yahoos. Gulliver made this understanding painfully obvious as he said, " I found my terror gradually lessened, but my hatred and contempt seemed to increase.
