Ballet Repretory Theatre - Fall Festival

On September seventh, I attended The Ballet Repertory Theatre perform in their Fall Festival. Their performance showcased such a variety of ballet ranging from the classics like Act II of Marius Petipa's La Bayadere to more contemporary ballet such as the last piece of the show, Expressions. I was shocked to discover that the ages of these young performers ranged from around age ten to age 18.
The performance began with Act II of La Bayadere otherwise known as "the kingdom of the shades." Chills ran through my body as the Corps de Ballet entered with the parade of arabesques this Act is most known for. I saw The Bolshoi Ballet perform the full-length version of La Bayadere last November and I have to admit that these young ballerinas performed the parade of arabesques with just as much stage presence as The Bolshoi Ballet. .
The roll of Nikiya was beautifully danced by Randi Galbraith. Randi and Michael Houston who danced the roll of Solar partnered each other exquisitely. They both danced with over the top, expression and amazing grace. Stacey Hill who danced the roll of the second soloist also caught my eye with her quick feet and unbelievable multiple pirouettes. .
The costumes for this dance consisted of beautiful classic white tutus with tons of gold beading on them. Each ballerina wore a dangling beaded headpiece around their buns that added an exotic touch to their costumes. Michael matched all of the ballerinas in his all white pants, shirt and sash. The lighting for La Bayadere was soft and romantic with lots of purples and pinks. .
Right before the second intermission, Christopher Sellars performed a short solo entitled, Variation From La Corsair. This high-energy solo began with him bursting from the wings in a series of leaps and jumps. It was extremely exciting to see Christopher jump as high as he did and add up to four beats in his jumps. As he took center stage and began to execute a series of flawless pirouettes I realized that he is in my ballet class.
