Is marriage just for heterosexual people?.
Our country prides itself on our strong acceptance of diversity and equality in all aspects of our lives. Large corporations are now required to have a diverse workplace, with people of all ages, races, nationalities, and sexes. Many of these corporations also have rules in place to create equality between homo and heterosexual individuals. Ayers and Brown state that "domestic partnership (is) being sanctioned by a number of cities, corporations, and universities"( 1 ). Our melting pot country has even told us to accept homosexual individuals and treat them as equal. But our government is not treating homosexuals as equals. Gays and lesbians are to be considered equal in all aspects of our lives, except for marriage. Only a male and female in America are allowed to marry in this culturally diverse nation of ours. Is it our government's right to decide when two people are in love or not? I do not believe so. Our government and society needs to realize how unrealistic our marriage policies are for same-sex couples.
Each standard our country holds is considered acceptable for that period in our country's society. Once there was a time when immigrants were turned away at our shores. But then our country began to grow and immigrants were allowed onto American soil. They came from all over the world to make this country what it is today. Women were once not even considered to have a say in how our country was being run, until 1850, when women began to fight for their rights. Today men and women are equals. In the 1600's, African Americans only use was to be the white man's slave. This no longer exists and is inhumane even upon an animal. .
As bad as our country's past may sound, we have evolved with the changing times in society. This should hold true to the debate on same-sex marriage. Once there was a time when .
