The refrence to wealth in the novel

Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" is rich in symbolism, which is portrayed on several different levels in a variety of ways. One of the most important qualities of symbolism within this novel is the reference to money and wealth. Money symbolizes a social evil as it destroys lives of people corrupted by wealth. .
In the first chapter, Fitzgerald treats money as if it was a divider for social classes and tells how wealth divides the society into different groups. For instance, East Eggers have "inherited money" whereas West Eggers have newly acquired money. Tom is an example of an East Egger who has "prestigiously" inherited quite a lot of "old" money. Gatsby is a West Egger who by boot legging, swindling and doing favors for others has acquired "new" money.
Fitzgerald refers to wealth as an importance to Tom and Daisy because it makes them feel superior to those who have less. All of these characters have been corrupted by their greed, but the one person that has not is Nick, Daisy's cousin. .
F.S. Fitzgerald shows the materialistic objects these individuals own and the amounts of money they have and spend, so that the reader can have a significant understanding of the importance of money in the novel. Without an established financial status in the East Egg, you are considered a "nobody", no matter what school you attended nor whom you know. If you have money it must be old money and well known.
The most important theme of this story is the character relationships. Each person in the story is treated a way based on their social status. The women in this "secret society" can not see themselves marrying a man of lower class because it would hurt their image and they would have as much money as they want. There is a lot of cheating going on in the relationships between the people in west and east egg, it seems as if there is no real love and the relationships are just formed because of wealth and financial status.
