             Geoffery Chaucer's exact birth date is unknown. How ever it is estimated that his birth-date runs between 1342 and 1345, and his death in the late fourteenth century, early fifteenth century. The following is history during his time which most likely influenced his writing and thoughts.
             During the time in which he wrote The Cantebury Tales, pilgrimages were normal ecspecialy with very religious people. His book was about a pilgrimage to Cantebry in which multiple characters wold tell a story and interact. The pilgrimage was second of importance to the medieval church, the first being the medieval church itself. The main purpose of the pilgrimage was to bring the participants closer to important religious sites, like cathedrals, Jerusalem. They would also go to see relics. Its like people going to see the Grand Canyon today. .
             All the pilgrims had different reasons for going how ever. Some went to pray, some for personal reasons, some to pray for ill. Others would go to show devotion to their religion by sacrificing time and energy, others went for for pure recreation and socialism. .
             The church in Chaucer's time was as important as life itself to a lot. The Catholic church owned extraordinary amounts of land, in general they were very powerful and wealthy. This power let underlings of the church abuse its power and holy stance to play on fears of the common people. This is clearly seen in the Pardoners tale.
             .
             The economic system of England was that of the feudalism. Feudalism is a system that works like this: The nobles owned the farm land they "rented" the land out to the surfs and peasants. The surfs and Peasants would farm and take care of the land and animals. They would give the farmed crops to the nobleman who gave them their profit and took their profit to live on. The nobleman also had the job of protection from enemies. In general the surfs were happy and content. However one time a revolt in England in 1381 led by Wat Tyler occurred.
