Women who receive low income or welfare tend to suffer from symptoms of depression; their work environment suffers as well as their families and children. Many lives have been influenced by such an overlooked disease. For example, lives such as my own, Alfred Kazin, and many others. Many have experienced the suffering of their mother's and families deteriorating due to depression. A woman with low income or receiving welfare statistically has more of a chance of suffering from depression than a woman with a stable income. By suffering from depression, it can affect the workplace, home life and most importantly the children. Unfortunately, children can have an adverse effect growing up in an atmosphere filled with depression. Kazin and I both suffered by watching our mother's experience pain and sadness as she went through in her everyday life. .
As Kazin states in The Kitchen, "Poor as we were, it was not poverty that drove my mother so hard; it was loneliness. a loneliness locked up in her kitchen that dwelt every day." Kazin's family suffered from poverty, along with his mother suffering from symptoms of depression. As Lennon stated in her research for low-income women with depression noted directly from the American Psychiatric Association, "Depression is a debilitating illness, characterized by profound feelings of sadness, low mood, and loss of interest in usual activities, that can have severe adverse effects, not only on the individual but also on her job and family life" Kazin's mother's loneliness was due to lack of income trying to provide for her family by an unending labor. She slaved in the kitchen everyday for years sewing dresses for women. She became so overwhelmed trying to provide for her family plus performing all the duties of a mother; she felt as if her life was one giant carousel. After performing all her obligations such as cooking, cleaning, and sewing, she inevitably still ended up in the same place where she started.
