Reversed Responsibility

I was slouching sloppily on my reclining seat staring at my disheveled desk, which was full of papers and books. My room was quiet because any sort of distraction such as music or conversation prevented me from studying. This was exactly what I was not doing at the moment. I sighed and reluctantly thought of all the exams I had the next day. Finals week was definitely not my favorite week of the semester. I grabbed a pencil and prepared to tackle my textbooks once more when suddenly there was a knock on my door. My father strode in holding a packet of papers, his expression was stern and serious and I instantly knew what he wanted. I gave a deep sigh, and tried to protest, but I knew that there was no point. After all, being the oldest sibling in the family, these kinds of jobs always came straight to me. I took the papers in my hands and glanced at the pages. The words seemed endless, but I knew that there was no way out. My father nodded almost sorrowfully and he patiently waited as I attempted to read through the never-ending sentences. Finals would have to wait. .
Ever since I was able to read short novels and comprehend the English language, my parents began to use me as a valuable tool for developing their English skills. As immigrants from Korea, their native language of Korean was their comfort zone and it was hard for them to adapt and understand English because for them it was a second language. Fortunately, I grew up in the United States, and my native language was English. Thus, I became an importance in my family and my parents' lack of English skills was replaced by my own developing skills. I soon became a translator, dictionary, and teacher starting from a young age. Of course, the older I got, the work that was given to me only became more complex and in depth. I was suddenly translating their work, papers, bills and statements. When I acquired typing skills, I became a personal secretary and began to write letters for them.
