Act 2 Scene 3 Line 10: "Iago is most honest-, Othello.
A wave of snickers passed the ears of many as that very sentence grabbed the attention of the crowd. A vile creature, (yet human) named Iago has been crawling around on his belly like a serpent continuing a path of destruction with the wit of a fox. If anyone were to be psycho-analyzed or even to be asked if they had any thoughts of mischief or pranks when they were young, they would say yes. From such a small display of child-like actions a deeper, dark and sinister portrayal can be put forth in this play. That example the "lust for power- was greatly expressed by the actor Anthony Cochrane as our man Iago, ensign of Othello. Being a distinguished actor there must be a level of "living the role- kind of mentality. To conjure the spirits to play the most evil intellect of the story must be some what satisfying. Being considered the main attraction of the story, destroy a couple lives and capture the essence of our dormant emotions called hate brings an almost "Super villain- status to Iago.
It was great to see Iago come a live with such illustration. Iago's confrontation with the audience whom was watching his every move, revealed himself as the villain. "And what's he then that says I play the villain," and know that the crowd would laugh as though he were a clown. The motives given by Iago were still a little to vague to try and have him possess power, yet Iago's case showed much more hatred and racism/sexism towards Othello and the others. From even 20 rows up I could still see Iago's facial gestures as the stage prop lighting made his expressions ever more cunning and revealing. Iago definitely required a lot of energy and to use it only at the right places to boost his performance as a master of deceit. The extent and depth of his hatred for Othello and his desire and willingness to totally destroy him required a motivation more compelling than having been passed over for this promotion.
