Cardiac Arrest on the Playground

This isn't your average heart attack, according to Newsday on 8-23-02, "a sudden cardiac arrest means that the heart, for a variety of reasons, has been forced out of its normal rhythm. This electrical malfunction is called ventricular fibrillation. It is not the same as a heart attack, which is caused by a temporary blockage in the flow of blood to the heart. This type of cardiac arrest is much more dangerous and more fatal than a typical heart attacks." Unlike heart attacks the victim never even knows what happened to them. This problem is only compounded when factoring in the age of the children that are being afflicted. Newsday of 7-24-02 reports "from 1989 through 1996 the rates for cardiac arrest in children increased 17% for boys and 28% for girls." Consider the story of one victim, Kimberly Anne Gillary. Kimberly loved to swim and in April of 2000 she was the star of her schools water polo team. She was in the middle of a game, when suddenly she went into cardiac arrest. Despite the efforts of the physician on hand who performed CPR, Kimberly never regained consciousness and died a few days later. She was only 15 years old. This story illustrates the second problem associated with this issue. In cases of sudden cardiac arrest, CPR is often ineffective in saving the life of the victim. US News & World Report on 2-1-02 contends, "CPR is of limited help. But an electric shock to the heart can jolt it to life." This exemplifies the idea that AED's are a necessary life-saving tool. With the need for AED's so clearly evidenced, why are AED's not available already?.
The question of why is not so easily answered, because the cause of these problems is two-fold. On the one hand, many people in society still cling to the notion that CPR will work to restore a heartbeat to a person in cardiac arrest. It is important to emphasize that CPR is not a cure all, especially in a situation such as teen cardiac arrest.
