Essay on Fences by August Wilson

There are constantly people surrounding Troy Maxson. He has a loving wife, a family and a best friend, yet he is lonely. Troy doesn't know how to handle the emotions he has toward other people, so instead of dealing with people he pushes them away. By the end of the play, "Fences" by August Wilson, Troy has pushed away so many people that it is like he is living amongst strangers. But these strangers aren't strangers at all, they are the people that were his family and friends. Though being surrounded by the best support system, family and friends, Troy is lonely because he had erected fences to keep the people he needs the most emotionally separated from him.
Cory and Troy Maxson's father-son relationship is anything but desirable. The harder Cory works to better himself, the lower the moral between Cory and Troy becomes. Cory excels in football and is given the opportunity by recruits to go to college by playing football for the school. Troy refuses to sign the papers to allow Cory to be recruited because of a fear that was rooted in him nearly eight-teen years earlier. When Troy was released from prison he dreamed of playing Major League Baseball but at that time it was an impossibility because of racial discrimination. Troy tries to protect his son by not allowing him to experience the same disappointment as himself. Also, Troy tries to protect his dignity. Cory says, "Just cause you didn't have the chance! You just scared I"m gone be better than you, that's all" (Wilson, 199). Troy knows that his son having the opportunity he didn't have would upset him, but he is too stubborn to admit it. Cory is pushed to the point where there is little emotional contact between the father and son. The fence that separates Troy and Cory was built out of Troy's refusal to accept his sons" desires. .
Bono was Troy Maxson's best friend until Troy started getting serious with his mistress, Alberta.
