The Dieppe Raid...Was It Worth It?

The Dieppe raid was a military catastrophe for Canada. Five thousand Canadian soldiers, a thousand British Commandos and a small force of Americans landed on France's northern shores on August 19, 1942. The result of this was horrific. More than half of the Canadians involved were either killed or captured. In this attack, British warplanes were to bomb the Germans from the air while 6,000 troops and 50 tanks moved from the sea to land using landing crafts. But Canadian soldiers at Dieppe did not have battle experience and their attack was also inadequately planned. There were too few planes to drop bombs and destroy the German guns. When the Canadian soldiers moved onto the beach at Dieppe, they were easy targets. The Allies hoped to capture the port for 12 hours, and then take German prisoners and find information about the German defenses, but they were unsuccessful.
The Dieppe raid was a military disaster. At the end of the nine-hour raid, 907 Canadians were dead and 1,874 were taken prisoner by the Germans. However, the sacrifice was not completely unsuccessful. The mistakes made at Dieppe taught the Allies valuable military lessons. When the Allies he Allies attacked the Germans at Normandy, France on June 6th, 1944. They made careful plans. They also used more troops and additional planes to destroy the German defenses. The hard lessons learned at Dieppe helped the Allies succeed at Normandy, they used what they had learned from the Dieppe raid to their advantage, they defeated the Germans and won the most important victory of World War Two.
Important lessons were learned during the Dieppe raid, even though 907 sounds like a lot of lives to be lost, 82% of the soldiers survived. Some of those people did remain in camps for the remainder of the war so it was very tragic. But, I believe that the raid did not ultimately fail, the military was able to make better of the situation and learn from its mistakes.
