Italian Campaign

Canada deployed 91,000 men to fight in the Italian campaign, which for Canada's size was an outstanding effort. This number helped greatly to win the Italian Campaign. For Canada's size it contributed greatly by forcing Hitler to have another front. They also revolutionized hand to hand fighting and by doing all of this, it lead to the success of the campaign. .
Canada made a great contribution by aiding the Allies in Italy and this forced Hitler to set up on another front. By bringing the Canadian troops to Italy, more Allied troops could be moved to Europe. At the same time the Canadian troops were fresher as they had not yet seen much combat, and they were able to increase their attacks and move forward into Italy. This weakened Hitler on his other two fronts, as he was forced to move more men into Italy. It also relieved some of the pressure off the British and American Allies.
In Southern Italy, the Allied troops forced the Germans north and caused them to set up another front that became known as the "Winter Line". The Allies needed to push the Germans as far out of Italy as they could. But in order for the Canadians, British and American troops to move forward, they needed to capture a city called Potenza, a communications "hub" in the centre of the peninsula. The Canadian troops fought hard and took the city. Because Canada took the city it enabled the British, Americans and Canadian troops to spread out and move forward and push the Germans north.
The Canadians Revolutionized the war by fighting hand to hand combat in the streets of Ortona. The Canadians were having great troubles trying to move through the streets without losing many men because there were German snipers and land mines everywhere so they decided to move into the houses. They moved through each house by blowing holes through walls and taking the enemy on in the next house until they won the town.
