Masting Slavery


One narrative talks about how women worked longer than the men because the men only worked while there was sunlight. The women on the other hand were forced under candlelight to wash dishes, wash clothes, and do whatever else that was needed around the house. Another story talks about how some slaves escaped, but after some time they were captured. These slaves were captured by slave traders, which in fact went back into town to sell them. This slave found more fortune in his new owner. His new owner did not work him as hard and treated somewhat as an individual in which brought hope to him. Some of the women slaves had it much easier than others due in large part that they were the mistresses of the Master. These women had few household responsibilities in which made life much easier for them to live than other slaves in their time. These women would meet their Master in a barn in the middle of the night and have sex with them. If these women refused their Master then they would be beaten and were sometimes sold so that the Master could purchase another mistress that did what he desired. .
             Many responsibilities came form being a slave. Slaves were treated very poorly by most of their Masters. At times the wives of the Masters treated the slaves much worse than the Master would do himself. These women took pleasure in beating the slaves while her children would watch. Many slaves were used primarily in cotton picking which in fact was the leading source of income for the moderate white family. These slaves at times worked for more than thirty years in the fields doing the same thing for almost everyday of their lives. Some slave did not live long enough to see slavery put to rest. Some slaves were passed down form father to son when the father felt that the son could use a slave for better use than he could of. Some slaves were also sold when their Master felt that they were no use to them anymore.
