Being Gay is No Longer Taboo

Being gay was once something that was wrong in our society. By many it was frowned upon and some people took extreme measures in brutally assaulting and, in one instance I have heard about, even murdering an individual because of his sexual orientation. In a lesser form, gays and lesbians have been discriminated against in some companies hiring and firing practices. But due to legislation such as the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act, gays and lesbians have been afforded the same opportunities as straits. I do not feel that homosexuals are discriminated against and that they have every opportunity to succeed.
Homosexuality in our society was once taboo. No one liked to talk about it and many people were afraid to "come out of the closet". But in recent years, gays and lesbians have definitely made their way into the mainstream. An example of this is the Bravo series Queer Eye for the Strait Guy. It features five extremely outwardly gay men giving a strait man a fashion, home, and lifestyle makeover. These strait men are not pressured to do this. They are open to having gay men critique them and make changes as they see fit. This shoe is no different that a Jenny Jones makeover. Everyone can take a lesson from this. It gives strait people a chance to see that gays are not as different from everyone else as one might think. They have their own ideas and opinions that should be valued and taken into consideration. Homosexuals can see it as someone of their likeness succeeding in a way they never thought possible. And instead of sitting idly by and feeling hated or discriminated against, use the guys on the show as role models and get out and make their mark on the world.
Gays also feel discriminated against in the fact that in most states they are not allowed to marry. I agree that they are discriminated against in this way but it is not the way it should be. People argue that homosexuals should not be allowed to marry because they should not have the privileges that heterosexual couples have when is come to such things as taxes and health benefits.
