If Lincoln Had Not Freed The Slaves

In this article Tom Wicker lets us look at a side of the Emancipation .
Proclamation that we might not have looked at but is very important to .
understanding the civil war. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on .
September 22, 1862 and it declared slaves "forever free."(p.152) This .
proclamation was very damaging to the Confederate army. It would end all .
slavery in the states that where fighting in the war against the Union. And as .
Wicker states "and from that point on, the European recognition that the .
Confederacy so desperately sought would seem an endorsement of .
             slavery."(p.153) .
             .
President Lincoln had written the proclamation way before it was .
issued. He was advised not to have it declared until the Union had a victory. .
The Confederate army was making its way up to Baltimore and winning .
most of the Battles. But on September 17 the Union had a victory and the .
proclamation was put in effect. Lincoln believed very highly in no slavery .
and did not believe in human bondage. He is stated saying that "As I would .
not be a slave, so I would not be a master."(p.155) Lincoln had other reason .
for the Emancipation Proclamation, he did it for the good of the Union. He .
was being pushed very strongly by the influential Republican members of .
Congress and the threat of European intervention. Also the war was going .
badly for the Union. And the 4 boarder states that where among the Union .
didn't full agree with emancipation. So Lincoln asked for these states to .
agree to the emancipation but the declined so with force he put his foot .
down and went ahead and made the declaration. Lincoln was also quoted .
has to why he was making the emancipation. He said "My paramount .
struggle in this is to save the Union and is not either to save or destroy .
slavery."(p.158) Another statement he makes in that if he had to do it .
without freeing the slaves he would have and if he had to do it freeing the .
             slaves he would. .
I don't know about you but this socks me completely.
