Mary hastens to call Andrew, her brother, who is willing to go down with a family friend, Walter Starr, to get Jay. Andrew and Walter bring Hannah by to keep Mary company while she waits for them to return. During their wait Mary become extremely nervous and anxious. She's positive that if anything happened to Jay that his head has been injured. When Andrew arrives back at the house Mary assumes that Jay is dead and Andrews confirms that fact that he did die in the accident. Meanwhile Walter has gone to get Mary's parents, Joel and Catherine. Joel reassures his daughter that everything will be fine and to stay strong. When everyone had gathered in the living room Andrew tells them the details of the accident and of Jay. He explains that the cotter pin fell out of the steering mechanism and soon after he hit a rock causing him to lose control of the car. After he had lost control it swerved off of the road throwing his head into the steering wheel causing a concussion, which resulted in instant death. Then he was thrown out of the car that went up an eight-foot embankment. The good thing was that his death was instant and most likely painless. After Andrew's explanation Mary gets him to call Ralph to alert Jay's side of the family about his death. .
             All of the sudden everyone in the room feels a presence moving around the room and house. They all assume that it is Jay's presence that is in the room. Soon after most of the people leave but Hannah offers to stay with Mary. The next morning when Rufus wakes up the first thing he wants to do is show is father his hat. When he goes to his parents" room his mother asks him to wake his sister, Catherine, and tell her to come into the room. Mary tells the children that their father has died and they will never be able to see him again. The children are somewhat upset but actually don't understand the meaning of Death fully. During breakfast that morning Mary tells the children about the wreck and they ask question about it.
