Role of Women in Lysistrata

Lysistrata is a masterpiece of the great Greek tragedy. It is written by Aristophanes and tells the story about a revolutionary woman who found the way to mobilize and lead the women of Greece to achieve the ending of the war between Athens and Sparta. This image of women is not traditional in the Greek literature, and it is interesting to analyze, the role of women in this play, how they managed to be recognized and understood, how important the sexual relations were in the Greek society.
The role of women in this play is leaded by Lysistrata. She was the person in charge of the women and the one who found and planned the way to make their husbands go back home. She was intelligent and shrewd and was the only one who discovered the weak point of men. She realized that the women of Greece had to make a "war" to achieve the peace of the country and the return of husbands and sons to take care of their mothers and wives. She was strong and was the only one who solved the problems between Spartans and Athenians. .
It is curious the way the women acted to take control of the situation. They used the tools that characterized and stereotype them, such as their sexual power and the art of seducing a man, to obligate their husbands to end the war. They used their bodies and their charm to excite their men and then leave them alone without satisfying their needs. It is interesting how Lysistrata and her "army" used the stereotypes to show the importance and the power of women. They did not fight with challenging arguments, or asking to be more active in the society, they used the tools and the power that they already had, and took advantage of them.
