The Florida Everglades, located in Southern Florida is the largest wetland in the world. It also has one of the most diverse ecosystems anywhere, which is home to many exotic plants and animals. Overtime though, the everglades have changed dramatically due to population growth and expanding urbanization. This population growth and expanding urbanization needs to be slowed down in order to help conserve the environment. By slowing these human factors we can help stop the destruction of the everglades and will be able to control water flow to and from the everglades. .
100 years ago Southern Florida was filled with thousands of acres of undeveloped natural land. Today however this is not the case. Today there is a problem between human and nature's elements. Florida is now a leading state for urban sprawl, and population growth. On average Florida adds about 750 people and uses about 417 acres of land for urban use per day. Urban sprawl is low density development and unlimited outward extension of new development. This population growth in Florida is leading to more urban sprawl which has a negative effect for many reasons. Some reasons sprawl is looked at negatively is: it's very aesthetically displeasing, contributes to a weak sense of community, and adds more air pollution. While all of these factors are important, the most important factor that population increase and urban sprawl affect is its negative impact on the environment. This is especially true in South Florida, and needs a quick solution to help save this one of a kind environment. Decreasing population growth and urban sprawl in Southern Florida will help conserve the everglades and its ecosystem as well as help control water flow.
