During a time of war and terrorism, American society has become more dependent on the government for protection. With many decisions being made on the war front and here at home, without society's knowledge, it seems that the government is becoming more centralized. Considering Mills" main point on how the "power elite" functions, its centralized power structure, the elite theory most closely represents the current American political process.
Within the American political system, there exists a cooperative and interlocking unit made up of the largest corporations, the military, and the executive branch. Mills points out in his papers that most of the power in society does rest in these three "interlocking" units. "Within American society, major national power now resides in the economic, the political, and military domains."(Mills, 81) Although Mills wrote this paper in the 1950s, it still relates to present America. For example, on January 18, 2004, the U.S. Military awarded a 1.2 billion dollar contract to a subsidiary of Vice President Dick Cheney's former firm, Halliburton. The contract was awarded without allowing the Defense Contracts Audit Agency to properly examine it. The contract's purpose is to rebuild the Iraqi oil infrastructure to pre-war levels. Is it merely coincidental for this deal to be made with participation from all of the above groups? No, the "power elite" needs to work together to survive. That is how they came to take power, according to Mills, through structural tendencies and personal will. "As each of these domains becomes enlarged. the consequences of its activities become greater, and its traffic with others increases."(Mills, 83) .
In comparison, the pluralism theory incorrectly states that "any active and legitimate group will make itself heard effectively."(Dahl,101) Although Dahl thoroughly describes his definition of "heard," it seems not to be the issue.
