It's all about titles and not hurting someone's feelings!.
I can remember a time when having a job of a housewife was a noble thing. I think I am dating myself a little but a wife and mother staying home to take care of the house and the kids was not just common it was also expected and respected. But in today's world of dual income households that job is looked down upon. My wife stays at home to take care of our home and our children. I have seen the look of disgust in people's eyes when I tell them that my wife is a housewife. She is not a "domestic goddess" or a "residential engineer". She is a housewife. I feel that our society has gotten too far away from the grounded values that used to make America a great country. .
I guess I am a little old school when it comes to this kind of thing. I believe in calling a janitor a janitor. He is not a "sanitation engineer". Engineers are individuals who went to college and graduated with degrees after four or more years of demanding schoolwork. In my opinion, that is a title that should be earned by hard work. I am going to take a stab in the dark here and say that most "sanitation engineers" did not go to college; many probably didn't even finish high school. So why do we as a society bestow upon them the title that so many have busted their butts to earn? It's all about titles and not hurting someone's feelings. If you want the title of Engineer, then go to school and earn it.
I also want to touch on how this issue relates to minority groups. Supporters of the politically correct viewpoint might think that one should use the politically correct term of "African-American" rather that "Negro" or "Black" to avoid offending people of this race. I have a hard time with the term "African American". First of all why do I have to be politically correct and say that a black person is "African-American" when I hear black men greet each other with the term "nigger" (nigga).
