Summary: This is a story of a young man trying to fit into a new town and high school in all the wrong ways. He unwittingly becomes involved in a dangerous hate group, dragging his brother along with him. At first the danger and violence appeals to his hunger for power, and his general unhappiness with life transforms into a dangerous thirst for blood. Then Ben meets Eden, and gradually he begins to realize the hateful injustice of his actions. But the fear of how the hate group would react if he pulled out is strong, and the threats are menacing. Is it to late to save his brother and himself?.
Evaluation: This book was rich with characterization, wit, and emotion. The plot develops smoothly and quickly, and is rife with plenty of action and clever dialogue. The reader is compelled to continue turning the pages until the last one has been absorbed. Deep insight was cleverly interwoven throughout, which makes the reader contemplate what Ben's ultimate decision will be. Will he stand up for what he is learning is right, or will he just close his eyes to the horror?.
Recommendation: This book is different from most books about racial discrimination, considering it's told from the point of view of the offender. It lends a different perspective, while ultimately the same perspective at the same time. It doesn't glorify hate crimes in any way whatsoever, but it does portray the pain inflicted by them. A Perfect Snow is written at an eighth grade reading level, and I would recommend it to any and all students. .
Teaching: I would feel completely comfortable teaching this book to my class. It could perhaps be introduced best through a variation of literature circles. The book lacked expletives and vulgarities, and there weren't sex references other than kissing. It was written with wisdom and caution, but not so much caution that it doesn't get the message across to the reader.
