Look at Chinese Reforms in the Twentieth Century

Nathan does not believe it could. He reiterates this belief in his book China's Transition, in which he states that CCK's firm stance against China was a main cause in bringing Taiwan to the state it is in today. Even after CCK died, the KMT and its new leaders would not give in to China, and sometimes the United States", prodding for a complete reunion with China. It was not, however, solely the external relations of the KMT, which helped bring Taiwan towards democracy. Internally, the KMT's intra-politics as well as its relationship with other Taiwanese greatly advanced the democratic wave in Taiwan.
CCK believed that "subjected the ruling party [the KMT] to more media and electoral oversight and to increased political competition would revitalize its sense of mission, help get rid of some incompetent people, strengthen the party's image, and improve its links to the people." Just as in a market economy, Chiang expected the forces of supply and demand to improve the quality of politics in Taiwan. If the KMT felt pressure - not only because of media, but also because of competing political parties - then it would surely reform to become more democratic and egalitarian in nature. This method was eventually successful, perhaps beyond CCK's hopes. On March 18, 2000, Taiwan held its second free presidential elections, which resulted in Chen Shui-bian, a pro-independence candidate from the Democratic Progressive Party . This ended over fifty years of Nationalist rule in Taiwan. .
Although this is promising for the future of Taiwan, what lies in store for China? If Taiwan's freedom came through a slow break from Chinese rule, how will China itself escape its dismal past of democratic attempts? The answer, since the late 1970s, has been internal reform. Deng Xiaoping became the leader of the Chinese Communist Party in 1978, and immediately began the task of reforming an ailing super-nation so that it could rise to its proper level of power and glory.
