In doing this, Jackson has changed the nature of The Lord of The Rings to include a love story, making it more appealing to a wider-spread audience.
On a more simple level, a new medium, such as a film, will always change the nature of what is presented, as all different people will see things differently and therefore have their own image of the characters that will be immediately changed when viewing the actors, who are unlikely to match all people's views.
However, does this really constitute a change in the nature of what is presented? Whether the characters look as expected by all or not seems almost irrelevant so long as they retain their relationships and attitudes throughout the film, in line with the book. If the characters themselves change with respect to these factors then surely the film is just a spin-off of the book or an original piece of work.
Another big budget film that has been released recently is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, taken from a series of books by J. K. Rowling. The film portrays the events in the book almost exactly, due to the fact that it is aimed predominantly towards children, like the book, and on the assumption that many of the viewers will have read the book. What is presented in the film is the same as is presented in the book, with the characters closely matching the descriptions from the book and the children watching unlikely to have preconceived ideas about the actors. The story is presented through a different medium but the nature of the presentation remains the same. The book is short enough, as it is aimed at children, so as to allow nothing to be cut but the film to remain under three hours and the simplicity of the story does not leave much room for individual interpretation, so the director's views will be almost identical to all the readers". It is not an ambiguous book and so if the director had interpreted it in any way against the so-called "normal view" then not only would the nature of what is being presented change but the whole story itself would be altered.
