Women of Trachis

Sophocles" Women of Trachis was very unique in many different aspects. The play featured the same actor, with different masks, portraying the roles of both Deianira and Heracles. The play was also unique in its topic. This paper will examine the possible meanings of the doubling of roles and explain what the topic of the play really is about.
One possible theory for the doubling of roles was to show that both characters would have the same fate in the end. This theory adds an interesting element to the story. It is not until one reaches the end of the story that the true ending of the story becomes clear. The reader learns that both characters died at the end of the story due to their tragic flaws, which shows the reader that they indeed had the same fate.
Another theory is that the roles were doubled to show the relationship between the two characters. When the play was actually being acted out some people may not have known that the two characters were actually husband and wife until the story had progressed somewhat. When the characters were played by the same actor, it gave the audience an indication that the two were related in some manner without telling the audience what the actual relationship between the two characters was. Another relationship between the characters was that both of them had "tragic flaws". His tragic flaw seemed to be that he never had enough. Heracles might have been saved had he not have wanted to capture more territory. He would have also been saved from death if he had been satisfied with his wife instead of lusting after Iole. Deianira tragic flaw was that she was too selfish. She could have simply been satisfied that her husband was going to return home safely, but instead she got upset that she might have to share his love with another woman. Her selfishness can be saw throughout the story when she constantly talks about herself and how bad her life is.
