Homeland Security Responding to Bioterrorism

A new threat has put the US on its heels ever since the fall of 2002 anthrax scare. The possible spread of biological agents on US soil brings fear and panic to the American people. The threat is credible and it is a major risk to the American people. The best solution is to vaccinate all military and medical personnel, and educate doctors and family physicians through the internet and electronic journals so they can be aware of bioterrorism threats and bring comfort to people's families.
This threat is new to the US. The American people have not experienced this type of attack; we are used to the oh-so-familiar guns, knives and people blowing up buildings-- now we have to deal with a higher and quicker death factor. To make things worse, we cannot even trace the biological agents, which are not so visible to the naked human eye without proper equipment. Anthrax and smallpox are the two leading biological threats. Both of these diseases are incurable; once in contact one has to just let the disease run its course, hoping the victim is strong enough to withstand it. The consequences of a more coordinate attack could be very serious. "In a large urban center, the true costs of a bioterrorist attack might be the consequences of panic, such as a stock market collapse in New York or a commodities market crash in Chicago." .
Terrorism is not only the ability to spread chemical agents, or release viruses, but the ability to bring fear to people. The objective is to create so much fear and panic to certain areas that the people hurt and destroy themselves far more severely than the initial biological agent. That is the worst way to kill people, to allow them to run around like animals, not using logic and cutting themselves from everyday life activities. That's why doctors and family physicians are so much needed in this type of stage: To allow doctors to reduce fear and reassure that everything is going to be OK.
