Gender Gap

The fact that women are paid less then men is fairly known. I researched articles on the internet to determine the specifics on this topic. While researching I discovered four articles that gave important statistics and information in regards to pay and the gender gap.
             .
The most detailed and enlightening article I found was done by CNN.com. This article entitled, "Gender-wage decided by more than discrimination", states data that shows where the wage gap between men and women is currently. Women earn about 75 cents for every dollar a man earns. The Census Bureau figures from 1998 show that men's median earnings were $37,000 in comparison to women's median earnings of $27,000. This comparison illustrates that in 1998 women made 73 cents to every dollar made by men. Being a working woman, this comparison appears discouraging, however, there is progress being made. In the 1970's women made 59 cents to every dollar earned by a man. Other factors mentioned in this article play a role in the pay gap such as education, job choices, and discrimination. In conclusion, this article states that, "So for women with equal experience, working the same kinds of jobs, the 27 cent female-to-male wage gap shrinks to 12 cents.
"The Gender Gap: Women Paid Less Than Men, Even in High-Tech Jobs" is another article I found interesting because it relates to the high tech industry which is very vast in the Bay Area and was done by ABCnews.com. This article explains how even though information technology work such as computer programming, design and engineering is growing at a rapid pace there is still an important gender gap that exists within these occupations. Women make up only 29 percent of the basic information technology jobs even though they are 47 percent of the work force at large. On top of these facts, women are scarcest in the high tech jobs that pay the most. .
Another occupation in which I found an article that related to pay and the gender gap was Professors.
