This is best shown through Duror's thoughts, which help to develop the sinister theme.
"His fists tightened on his gun. He saw himself returning, kicking open the door, shouting at them his disgust, and then blasting them both to everlasting perdition. He felt an icy hand on his brow as he imagined that hideous but liberating fratricide.".
Following from this quote Duror contemplates why two "sub-humans" should be allowed to survive when fit young healthy men were dying. This is an extremely good insight into the force of Duror's wickedness and obsession. This is symbolic of the Nazi regime and in my opinion provides sufficient evidence to suggest, Duror agrees with the Nazi philosophy of the Arian race.
The impact of Duror's obsessional thoughts regarding Calum, on his everyday life, is shown clearly in Duror's inability to think clearly and have a conversation without making reference to Calum.
When Duror is with Mrs Morton he asks, "These two men from Ardmore, Effie. I wonder if you can tell me anything about them.".
During his examination with the Doctor he asks "as if casually "Have you ever had any dealings, doctor, with a couple of brothers from Ardmore?".
It is quite clear to see that the force of his devious obsession is powerful and is forever on his mind, thus disrupting his everyday life. This is again clearly portrayed when Duror wants to contribute to a conversation about the war but the evil force inside his head prevails him from doing so. .
"He seemed to be joining in more enthusiastically to the gossip about the war; but his mind, baulked in it virulence, was prowling in the alcove, sniffing at the affection between the brothers and snarling at their unconscious complicity in his torment.".
The unconscious crime of tormenting Duror, that the two brothers commit, proves that this accusation is only in Duror's head and it is this evil force, which is overpowering him into thinking that the cone gatherers are responsible.
