Catherine Called Birdy

"The bold are helpless without cleverness." This statement was stated by Euripides. It means that no matter how confident, courageous, or impudent your are about something it will never work out if you don't have the brains to pull it through. I agree with this statement because there are so many ways to prove this quote true even in my life today as we live our life regularly. I would like to introduce the novel, Catherine Called Birdy by Karen Cushman and Medea by Euripides, two works of literature that can apply to this quote.
Catherine Called Birdy was a novel written by Karen Cushman. The main character and protagonist, Catherine, had many situations where she showed that the bold were helpless without cleverness. Catherine was constantly being burdened with trying to get rid of the suitors that her father kept trying to sell her off to. Of course Catherine herself was very brave and willing to do anything to get rid of the suitors, but what would she have done without cleverness? How would she have planned to chase away the suitors that were willing to offer her dad tons of riches? For example, one of the suitors that Catherine faced, came while Catherine was outside along with the villagers. With Catherine's bravery and cleverness, she went right up to the suitor, while acting like a peasant. She tricks him into thinking she is one of the villagers and tells him that Catherine is actually crazy and dirty. The suitor then runs away thinking that this is all true. Another example, is when another suitor comes to see if he can get Catherine with his money. Knowing what to do, Catherine dirties herself up. She puts straws in her hair and blackens her teeth, not caring what her father would do to her later, worrying about only the present. Of course this tactic works out as you see that Catherine used both boldness and cleverness.
The second literary work that can be referred to the quote is the play, Medea, by Euripides.
