Amanda and the glass menagerie

In life people are faced with many different kinds of problems, some physical, others mental. People can either be born with these issues or they develop them over time. In any case no person is perfect and everyone has some kind of problem. The play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams is no exception to this fact. There are four main characters and each of them has their own little ticks that make them imperfect. Whether it's the mothers craziness and being overbearing on her children, Laura with her inferiority complex and crippled leg, or Tom with his drinking problem and lack of the feeling of satisfaction from everyday life, all the characters have problems. Amanda, Tom and Laura's mother, has the biggest problem if you ask me. She is both delusional and overbearing on her family. I can relate to her because my grandmother is the same way. Throughout the play it becomes more and more obvious that she is in need of some serious help. .
From the very beginning you can see how the mother is very in and out of reality. At dinner with her children she asks her daughter about how many gentlemen she was expecting that evening and the daughter said none. As you read on you find out that it has been this way for six years ever since she finished high school, and still every night her mother asks the same question over and over again. After doing so she goes on this rant about how she use to have seventeen callers every Sunday, and how in Blue Mountain every man wanted to be with her. In an underlying matter she gives off the feeling as if she is belittling her own daughter. What woman in her right mind would make her daughter feel like she was not worthy of having gentleman callers? Amanda belittles Laura about other things as well. She does it unknowingly that what she is saying truly pushes her daughter into a state of depression. Amanda almost lives in a serial state.
