What is Anorexia Nervosa

A person who becomes anorexic is often in denial, and thinks of food as a poison. When face to face with another person they would tell them that they are not hungry and will eat later on. Anorectics feel that the whole world thinks they are fat, and everyone is staring at them. Most people with this disease watch people eat, and even cook for them. They become disgusted with the thought of eating food. .
             There are many different reasons why people become anorexic. Health officials will never be able to write a list of the reasons because everybody has their own personal reason why they became anorexic. They are continually changing. "They want everything in their lives to be perfect. People who have this disorder are usually good students. They are involved in many school and community activities. They blame themselves if they don't get perfect grades, or if other things in their life are not perfect" (National Eating Disorders Association 1). The most common reason that is known is that people are dissatisfied with their body weight. This is a result of American society's emphasis on thinness and body shape to measure a person's attractiveness. The reason anorexia mostly affects women is because there is more pressure on females to be thin by the media. "Media images of very thin models and actors lead many people to believe that they will only be considered attractive and successful if they are extremely thin. These images may cause many people to develop unrealistic expectations for their own bodies. People may also feel pressure from family members or peers to be thin" (Encarta). These social pressures are what lead people to become anorexic. Another major issue that leads people to this disease is family relations. "A girl has a ten to twenty times higher risk of developing anorexia nervosa, for instance, if she has a sibling with the disease" (Wolfe 2). That would suggest that genetic factors may predispose people to eating disorders.
