The Sound and the Fury

It occurs about eighteen years prior to the first section and Benjy is fifteen years old. Quentin is also obsessed with the past and he experiences many flashbacks, most of them giving insight into the Compson children's adolescence. The beginning of this section starts on the day that Quentin commits suicide (Good Friday) by drowning himself. This section follows Quentin around and shows the events that happen that lead up to his death.
One theme of this section is that time is inscapeable. Quentin does everything he can to escape time and one of these events is breaking off the hands on his watch. Quentin has some problems with his father and the growing sexuality of his sister. Quentin is horrified by Caddy's sexual maturity and does not want to accept that fact. He confronts Dalton Ames, the man who may have impregnated Caddy, but is overpowered by him. Quentin's father says that as time passes he will forget about this problem; however, Quentin does not want to forget the meaning behind this horror. Therefore, he does the only thing he thinks is possible to escape time and prove his father wrong and that is to commit suicide.
The third section is dated April 6, 1928, it is told by the third Compson brother, Jason, and takes place on Good Friday. Jason focuses more on the present and experiences fewer flashbacks than Benjy and Quentin did.
