An-Mei Hsu seems to be very superstitious. On page 129 there is an example of her superstition. After Bing drowned at the beach Rose says, "My mother poured out tea sweetened with sugar into the teacup, and threw this into the sea. And then she opened her fist. In her palm was a ring of watery blue sapphire, a gift from her mother, who had died many years before. This ring she told me, drew coveting stares from women and made them in attentive to the children they guarded so jealously. This would make the Coiling Dragon forgetful of Bing. An-Mei Hsu also is very strong and brave. On pages 218-219 an example of this is when An-Mei leaves her whole life behind to start a new one with her mother that she .
hasn't seen since she was a little child. An-Mei's uncle says, "Throw your life away? If you follow this woman, you can never lift your head again. An-Mei believes she is doing the right thing so she goes with her mother anyway. I believe she is showing bravery and strength. .
An-Mei Hsu seemed to be criticized a lot when she was young and is therefore left wondering about herself. On page 47 there is an example of how she is criticized. An-Mei gets burned on her neck and she is close to dying. Popo thinks she is going to die so she says, " Your dying clothes are very plain. They are not fancy because you are still a child. If you die, you will have a short life and you will still owe your family a debt. Your funeral will be very small. Our mourning time for you will be very short." Then Popo said something worse. She said, "Even your mother has used up her tears and left. If you do not get well soon, she will forget you.".
Rose Hsu Jordan seems complex. On page 193 there is an example of why she is complex. Rose and Ted were getting a divorce and Rose was very upset about it.
