Fundamentals of Football: Offensive & Defensive Philosophy

            When it comes to offense my basic package is a single back formation with one tight end and three wide receivers. From this I would normally run a West Coast offense. My running back would have to have some speed and good hands because I would throw numerous screens and dumps to him. The tight end would not only have to block pretty well because of the vacancy of the full-back but also he would need to be able to catch the ball a lot because this is a quick throw offense. The wide receivers would have to not only be pretty fast to get yards after the catch because the passes are shorter then usual but they would also have to not be scared of going over the middle for some slants, especially the slot receiver. I would prefer that the offensive line were quicker and more mobile then the usual big ones so that I could get more pulling from the guards and center. Finally the quarterback wouldn't necessarily have to be mobile because of the quick throw nature of the offense, sacks would be down. But he would have to be a smart and efficient quarterback because of all the different intricacies of the West Coast offense.
             Defensively I would go in the basic 4-3-4 defense. But the catch is that this would be a very aggressive 4-3-4 with a lot of blitz packages that would be sending linebackers, safeties, and even corners at the quarterback. This would put less pressure on the defensive line because they wouldn't have to worry all that much of getting to the quarterback if I"m bringing two or three extra guys. But this would put pressure on the secondary because they would have more guys to cover. I would make sure my secondary was fast and athletic, my corners jamming and my safeties hard-hitting. My linebackers would also need speed to make up for blitzing secondary personnel. They would have to play pass coverage and they would have to stuff the run when called on to do so. But my defense would really depend on the personal because if my linebacker depth is just huge and my linemen depth is minuscule then I might go with a 3-4-4 so I could get more athletes onto the field.
